Health Insurance
Employee's Health Insurance vs National Health Insurance
Employee's Health Insurance (Shakai Hoken) program
Shakai Hoken is a public insurance program for employees and their family members to receive medical benefits or allowance when needed, in case they get injured/ill outside of work, and could not work due to their medical conditions, death or pregnancy.
Employers pay half of the insurance premium in this program.
Please inquire about your application with your employer.
National Health Insurance (Kokumin Kenko Hoken) program
The National Health Insurance (NHI) is a mutual assistance program, in which every resident pays contributions (premiums) to reduce the individual burden of medical expenses in case of a sudden injury or illness.
Foreigners who have completed the Alien Registration process in Onomichi to stay in Japan one year or more must join the NHI in Onomichi City.
However, those who meet any of the following criteria cannot join the NHI.
- Those who can be insured under the Employee's Health Insurance program
- Those who are insured by an NHI association
- Welfare recipients under the Daily Life Protection Law
- Unregistered residents under the Alien Registration Law
- Unsupported and institutionalized children under the Child Welfare Law
