Health Insurance

Joining the NHI, reporting changes, etc.

You have to join the NHI when...

  • You move into Onomichi City.
  • You have a baby and you are already insured by the NHI.
  • You quit the Employee's Health Insurance program. (Family members cease to become dependent)
  • You stopped receiving public assistance.

The premium should be paid from the month the individual became eligible for coverage by the NHI, not from the month the individual applied. The premium for the lapse shall be paid as overdue. Also, medical expenses incurred during the lapse will not be covered by the insurance.

You have to quit the NHI when...

  • You leave Japan.
  • You moved out of Onomichi City.
  • In case of death.
  • You are enrolled in the Employee's Health Insurance. (Family members become dependent)
  • You start receiving public assistance.

Also, you have to report any of the following changes:

  • You changed addresses within the city.
  • The householder was changed. (ex.: after a marriage)
  • When dividing a household or combining households.
  • You lost, smudged or broke the insurance certification.

Documents to bring with you

When applying for the NHI, please bring your Alien Registration Certificate, seal (inkan) and passport with you. If another family member is already insured by the NHI, it is recommended to bring his/her insurance certification with you as well.
