Child Allowance

Child allowance system

The child allowance system is designed to aid in the cost of raising a child. Application must be done in the municipality in which the child's legal guardian with the highest income is registered. (Hereafter called "the guardian")

Eligibility

A child who has reached 12 years of age is eligible for child allowance until the first occurrence of March 31^st thereafter. The guardian's income from the previous year must be below the maximum allowed, as listed in the table below.

¹ May include the guardian's spouse, should he or she be covered by the guardian's policy. This is the same as the number of "dependents"on the guardian's income tax return.

Allowance amounts

For every child under 3 years old	10,000 yen per month
For children aged 3 years and over	One child	5,000 yen per month
	Two children	5,000 yen per month
	Three children	10,000 yen per month

Payment method

The child allowance is deposited directly into the guardian's account at a financial institution, excluding post office accounts. The City of Onomichi pays the child allowance three times a year, in February, June and October. Payments are usually made on the 15^th of every month (or the next business day should the financial institution be closed on that day.)
