Subsidization of Infant Medical Expenses
In Japan, the cost of a medical treatment covered by a health insurance policy is usually shared between the National Health Insurance (NHI) or the Employee's Health Insurance (see the "Hospitals and Health" page of this web site) and the policy holder. However, Onomichi City subsidizes a part of the medical costs shouldered by the parents or guardian of a pre-school child.
As of October 1st, 2007, hospitalization fees are subsidized for pre-school and elementary school children.
Subsidized expenses
Except for a part of the co-payment, the cost of an infant's medical treatment covered by an insurance policy is subsidized by the city.
Food expenses while hospitalized, infant medical checkups, vaccinations and expenses incurred for treatments not covered by the health insurance policy are not subsidized. A partial co-payment is required for the following:

Please note: Should the pharmaceuticals prescribed at a hospital be available only at a separate, independent drugstore, such pharmaceuticals can be acquired without co-payment.
The application for subsidization of infant medical expenses must be renewed each year in the month of the infant's birthday.
Eligibility
The requirements to qualify for subsidization are:
- The infant is registered in Onomichi City
- The infant has a health insurance card
- The guardian's income is less than the maximum allowed (see below)
A pre-school child is eligible for subsidization of his or her medical until the first occurrence of March 31st after the child turns 6 years old.

1 May include the guardian's spouse, should he or she be covered by the guardian's policy. This is the same as the number of "dependents"on the guardian's income tax return.

Should you have moved in Onomichi after January 1st, you will also need your income certificate for the previous year.
