Kindergarten and nursery school
Kindergarten
Kindergartens are educational institutions where 3 to 5 year-old-children1 are taken care of for an average of 5 hours per day. There are public and private kindergartens, and some private ones are responsible for the commuting of children by school bus.
1 Please note that some kindergartens accept 4- and 5-year-old children only, while others accept only 5-year-old children.

Nursery school
Nursery schools are child welfare facilities operating in accordance with the Child Welfare Act and under the administration of the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry. There are both licensed and non-licensed nursery schools. They care for children whose parents or guardians are unable to do it themselves because of conflicting working schedules, illness or other reasons. Care is provided to children aged 0 to 5 years for an average of 8 hours per day.
Some nursery schools provide care for children with disabilities or after hours care. For admission at a licensed nursery school, please apply at either City Hall's Child-Care Support Division or at the any of its branch offices located in Innoshima, Mukaishima, Setoda, and Mitsugi.
