Education
Senior high school
Admission
A high school is a school for students who have graduated from junior high school. In Japan, more than 90% of the population advance to high school. There are national, public and private high schools. To enter a high school, a person must take a very competitive examination. There are also schools which have a recommendation entrance system. Even if someone has not graduated from junior high school, he or she can take an entrance examination if that person has obtained an education that is recognized as being equal to a junior high school education.
There are many kinds of high schools. Classes are divided according to content; schools can offer regular courses, special courses (technical, business, agricultural, foreign language courses, etc.) and general studies courses. Schools are also classified according to the hours classes are held; daytime school are called Zennichi sei, part-time ones are called Teiji sei, and schools which offer correspondence courses are called Tsushin sei.
Expenses
In Japan, senior high school education is not considered compulsory education. Therefore, students or their parents and guardians must shoulder all the costs related to a senior high school education, including (but not limited to) the school's fees, the school texts, etc. Some measures do exist for low-income families, but they are not available for everyone; please contact each school for more information.
Life in a senior high school in Onomichi
In many aspects, the daily life of a senior high school student is quite similar to the one of a junior high school student. However, the very nature of senior high schools as educational institutions outside of the compulsory education system makes for quite an increase of pressure to perform on the students... This is why, when September comes, many third-year students opt out of their club activities to concentrate on their studies.
