Labor insurance

Basically, there are two kinds of labor insurance.

Workers' accident compensation insurance

When a worker is injured, becomes sick or suffers from some kind of disaster that clearly happened while on duty and he/she meets the requirements, he/she will receive a guaranteed minimum amount of money. Employment insurance

Employment insurance provides unemployment benefits to a worker who lost his/her job, until a next job is secured. This insurance is accessible to everyone who satisfies the criteria as stated below.

Obtaining employment insurance and insurance eligibility

Any business owner with more than 1 employee is required to assure his/her employee(s) with the employment insurance program. The employer and employees equally share the cost of insurance premiums.

This protection also applies to foreigners with the "permanent resident", "spouse or child of Japanese national" or any other status of residence which allows to work in Japan. For more information, please contact the nearest Hello Work Office.

Conditions for receiving unemployment benefits

• To prove qualification to employment insurance by showing a "rishokuhyo" (letter of separation)
• To be willing to work again, having the ability to do so and being in a situation that allows work

To obtain unemployment benefits, you must go in person to the Hello Work Office which covers the area where you work (as shown on the Alien Registration Certificate).

There is a Hello Work Office in Onomichi City, but unfortunately it doesn't provide services in any foreign language. Please bring your own interpreter if you need to have your business taken cared of there. There are interpreters available in the Fukuyama City and the Hiroshima City Hello Work Offices. • Hiroshima Hello Work Office: Offers services in Portuguese and Spanish. 8-2, Kami-Hacchobori, Naka-ku, Hiroshima-shi, TEL: 082(227)1644. Open from Monday to Thursday, from 8h30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
