Vehicle tax

The vehicle tax is levied on people owning vehicles (with engines of more than 660cc) as of April 1 each year. Remittance for the full amount as indicated on the invoice must be paid by May 31 of each year. Four-wheel vehicles with engines of 660cc or less (the so-called "yellow plate cars") are not subject to this tax; they are subject to the light motor vehicle tax.

When changes such as scrapping a car or moving in from another prefecture occur after April 1, a monthly calculation of taxes will apply. The amount of tax to be paid varies according to a vehicle's engine.
