Senkoji Park
photo

The mountain located behind the JR Onomichi Station is Mt. Senkoji, which peaks at 139.6 meters above sea level. Covering most of the mountain is Senkoji Park, which spreads out from the top to the side of the mountain.

Visitors can enjoy thousands of cherry blossoms (Senkoji Park is one of Japan's 100 best sites for viewing cherry blossoms) and azaleas in spring, and purple and pink wisteria bloom beautifully in early summer. In fall, the whole park becomes awash with visitors who come admire the flowers at the Onomichi Chrysanthemum Flower Festival.

The park is also the location of the Onomichi City Museum of Art, the Path of Literature and Senkoji Greenland (playground). You can look at the entire area of Onomichi City and the islands of the Seto inland sea from an observatory at the top of the mountain. On a clear, sunny day, you can also get a glimpse of the mountains in Shikoku.

Get on a bus from JR Onomichi Station and get of at the Nagae-guchi bus stop (about 7 minutes). Ride the Senkoji Ropeway to the top of the mountain (3 minutes).
