The Commemorative Library is dedicated to the works of famous
authors and poets who shared their love of Onomichi through their writings.
It is devided into two main rooms, the first one for the authors (among
them Fumiko Hayashi, Hitomi Takagaki, Michiko Yokoyama and Rifu Yukimoto)
and another one for the poets (like Kenkichi Nakamura, Mutsu Yamashita
and Jiro Aso.)
Although called a library, books cannot be borrowed here. Please
go to the Onomichi Municipal Library to peruse the works of these famous
writers. (Click here to access the Onomichi Municipal Library's web site.)

Fumiko Hayashi
Fumiko Hayashi lived in Onomichi from the time of her elementary
school years until she graduated from senior high school, in 1922. The
work which brought her fame, “Horoki”, contains a famous line:
“There is the sea. There is the sea. How I missed Onomichi's sea
these last five years...”
It poingnantly evokes the author's feelings at seeing Onomichi, the city
she once called home.
Hayashi penned many books, among which “Fuukin to sakana
no machi”, in which the story takes place in Onomichi. |
