  Innoshima was once home to the Murakami Suigun, a group of people who could be described as a navy, pirates, privateers, or a little of each. They used to control the waters of the Seto inland sea between the Muromachi and the Sengoku periods.

  In 1999 (Heisei 11), the Innoshima Suigun Festival was awarded the grand prize in the “3rd Furusato Event Grand Prize,” a contest sposored by the Japan Center for Regional Development and 55 newspaper companies around the country. In addition the festival was commended by the Minister of Home Affairs.

Time schedule
The Island Festival
photo   The Island Festival is the first of the three-part festival. It is the biggest event in Innoshima, hometown of the Murakami Suigun. It consists of the Musha's (Warriors') parade, a ceremony at the local temple and a fireworks display.

The Fire Festival
photo   The second of the three-part Suigun Festival, it consists of a parade and dancing contest, a ceremony involving the burning of huge torches, a fireworks display, etc.

Venue Shimanami Beach
The Sea Festival
photo   The third of the three-part Suigun Festival, the Sea Festival consists of a “Kohaya” boat race, where it is common to have more than 30 teams of 16 people join in the competition. Teams are divided in three sections: general, ladies and elementary & junior high school students.
