During the Heian Era, as Sugawara-no-Michizane was on his way to Dazaifu in Kyushu, he stopped in Onomichi
and being greatly moved at the hospitality shown to him, offered in gratitude the sleeve of this coat. The townsfolk of Onomichi
then built the Misode Tenmangu shrine to serve as a repository for the sleeve, and to honor the man who bestowed it. The Tenjin Festival is held on
or near July 25, which is the anniversary of Michizane's death. There is a parade featuring many "mikoshi" (portable altars) and other events as well.
