Setsubun Ceremony

Date February 3rd
Venue Saikokuji Temple
According to Chinese astrology, there are twelve years in a single cycle, with each year characterized by an animal. We therefore speak of the “Year of the Dog,” or the “Year of the Horse,” etc. In the Setsubun Ceremony, men who were born under the current year's sign wear a loincloth and throw beans at the spectators, shouting, “Out with evil, in with good fortune!” thereby praying for another year of freedom from illness and peace in the family. In addition to beans, the men also throw rice cakes and tangerines that the spectators all the more eagerly try to haul in.
