The city of Onomichi adopted 'The Maritime City of Onomichi' as its slogan in 2006, after which it began making efforts to promote shipping-related activities. In conjunction with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport & Tourism's Chugoku District Transport Bureau, it established Onomichi Maritime City Promotion Council, which focuses on the promotion of shipping-related corporations, as well as the procurement and training of human resources for the maritime industry. The city also compiled a 'Shipbuilding Industry Promotion Vision of Onomichi City' in March 2012, establishing a roadmap for Onomichi's shipping industry going forward. A special series from Kaiji Press entitled 'The Maritime City of Onomichi' will introduce some of the shipping-related corporations in Onomichi and look at the efforts being made to promote the evolution of Onomichi into a maritime city.
